One of our regular meetings of the BTA Glasgow Tinnitus Support Group took place on Wednesday 3rd October. We are grateful to all of you who were able to attend because this contributed to a vibrant and fulfilling session.
New Attendees at Tinnitus Support Group
It was great to see so many new attendees. This allowed us to focus on the stories of the new members revealing commonalities. We were able to discuss how others have faced, coped with and improved their situation. Regular visitors told how they have returned to a more “normal” life which is not defined by tinnitus or hyperacusis. The discussions were very productive and there was lots of positive feedback within the group. The theme for Tinnitus Awareness Week 2019 will be Isolation and Loneliness. Support groups help to reduce this sense of loneliness due to the shared experiences.
BTA Annual Conference and Inaugural Public Expo
Alan also reported on the recent British Tinnitus Association’s Annual Conference and the following day’s public Expo, the first that the BTA has undertaken. Experts, both national and international were presenting ongoing research for better treatments and ultimately a cure for tinnitus. Among the topics discussed were “brain priming” and “bi-modal stimulation”. The good news is that Tinnitus and Hyperacusis are receiving much greater attention. Both subjects will feature in the BAA’s Annual Conference. Sue Falkingham, President of the British Academy of Audiology confirmed their inclusion in the November event.
BTA Tinnitus Support Group November Meeting
An upshot of Alan’s attendance at the BTA event was confirmation that a researcher from the National Institute of Hearing Research will present to our group at either November or January’s meeting. The date of the November meeting is Tuesday 27th November at 6:00 pm for 6:30 pm. Meetings don’t officially begin until 6:30 pm, but since many discussions begin before the start, if you don’t want to miss anything, it pays to be prompt. Meetings alternate between Tuesday and Wednesday which makes it easier to work around existing commitments.
