The November 2018 BTA Glasgow Support Group’s next meeting is Tuesday, 27th November 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm.
November 2018 BTA Glasgow Support Group Focus
Thank you to all of you who were able to attend and contribute to a vibrant and fulfilling session at our previous meeting. It was great to see so many new attendees and we hope that you will be able to join us for the final meeting of 2018
Guest Speaker Harriet Smith
We are delighted to welcome PhD student Harriet Smith from Nottingham University as guest speaker. Her work focuses on developing a questionnaire measure of tinnitus in children. She joined the Biomedical Research Team in 2016 to work on the Core Outcome Measures in Tinnitus International Delphi (COMIT’ID) study which will help standardise future clinical tinnitus trial methods. Harriet will be able to enlighten us on the very latest tinnitus updates because she is at the forefront of modern research.
THIS Scotland 2019
We will also have information on THIS Scotland 2019 (Tinnitus and Hearing Information Show) which will be held on Saturday, 9th February 2019 as part of our contribution to Tinnitus Awareness Week. We will also be announcing a very special headline speaker for the event. THIS Scotland 2018 was the largest publicly attended tinnitus focused event in the UK during Tinnitus Awareness Week with an array of prominent guest speakers. Over 200 visitors attended the event. This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better with a host of well informed and exciting guests and a larger venue (but still within The Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow).
Discussion Forum
As usual, there will be our popular group discussion forum, where we look at commonalities and find out how others have faced, coped with and improved their situation to come back to a “normal” life, not dominated by tinnitus or hyperacusis.
Tinnitus Awareness Week and THIS Scotland 2019
The theme for Tinnitus Awareness Week 2019 and THIS Scotland 2019 will be Isolation and Loneliness. Evidence shows that support groups like ours, by providing group discussions and bringing together people in a common situation to share experience and empathy help to diminish those feelings of isolation. The meetings also provide a source of information, moderated by Alan Hopkirk an expert in tinnitus and hyperacusis.

How does the group work?
Tinnitus and related conditions are unique to the individual. Research suggests that what might work for one person, may not be as effective for another. The BTA Glasgow Tinnitus Support Group shares the experiences of its members, discusses treatments and the latest evidence. Treatments options are available from the NHS, the private sector and through self-help. By sharing stories we aim to support members by showing them that they are not alone. Many other people have overcome similar hurdles. This shows that tinnitus and hyperacusis need not rule your life. Even small changes can make a big impact on your quality of life.
