Tinnitus Relief Glasgow, Scotland
We offer services including Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT) and sound therapy, that will provide relief from Tinnitus at our hearing clinics in Glasgow and Cumbernauld. Before we tell you about them, let’s take a look at Tinnitus.
Ringing in Your Ears?
Tinnitus is described as the perception of sound that isn’t stimulated by outside sources. It is a sound, that in all but the rarest cases can only be hear by the people who suffer with it. Do you hear a ringing, clicking, ticking, or hissing sound in your ears? Do you hear the sound very often or even all the time? If you answered yes to these questions, you may have tinnitus.
Tinnitus has been acknowledged for thousands of years, but it’s only in the last few decades that accumulating research has begun to offer hope with new theories and validated treatments being developed!
Qualified Tinnitus Therapy Professionals
As leading specialists in the treatment of this condition, we are therefore able to offer help and relief to most people who suffer from this distressing problem.
David S – Bathgate “6 Months ago I had this constant noise, 24/7 … the difference is night and day, absolutely incredible” December 2016
Our goal as Tinnitus treatment clinicians is to always look to offer the most effective treatment to our patients and it is important that we can always state we have no financial or contractual interests in a particular treatment protocol. In other words, we follow our treatment protocols because they work!
How can The Invisible Hearing Clinic help?
Help at The Invisible Hearing Clinic begins with a specially designed and detailed Tinnitus Assessment appointment. This also includes an individual patient history where we probe for the significant events (including medical referrals and previous interventions) specific to the individual. Most of our patients have suffered from tinnitus for years or even decades. However, recent research seems to recommend an early bespoke intervention.
Our treatment is safe and proven effective and is adapted to the individual. The treatment components are carefully considered and discussed in full with the patient. The good news is that whether a recent sufferer or long term, “hopeless” case, almost having given up, we are in most cases able to achieve clinically significant improvements of the patient’s quality of life – tinnitus is not something that “you just have to put up with!”.
We base our treatment on the Jastreboff Neurophysiological Model, whilst being aware of alternative psychological models. Treatment is based on TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy) with modern researched additional components such as CBT and mindfulness as the patient requires. As Tinnitus is accepted as heterogeneous, this flexible holistic approach, tailored to the individual patient’s needs has proved to be extremely effective.
Why Choose The Invisible Hearing Clinic?
Specialist Courses and Events Ensure our Knowledge is Fully Up-To-Date
Alan Hopkirk, Clinical Director at The Invisible Hearing Clinic regularly attends international tinnitus seminars. These are the perfect forums to enhance his specialist knowledge, meet with other tinnitus experts and share success stories. We expect medical doctors to keep their knowledge up to date by acquiring CPD (Continuous Professional Development) points, so why should it be any different in the private hearing sector? Alan recently attended the TRI Tinnitus Research Initiative in Taiwan. These top-level conferences ensure that Alan has access to the latest research. By taking part in three or four of these high-level seminars each year, Alan has a chance to discuss the latest thinking on tinnitus treatment and research and above all, share and validate his own ideas. Even when you are an “expert” it’s important to realise that there is still much more to learn and fine-tune.
“It’s a long way to travel but I feel I owe it to my patients to always be at the cutting edge of research and new or refined treatments for Tinnitus & Hyperacusis. It’s exciting that our understanding is evolving and even subtle improvements in treatment can make a big difference to individual patients’ lives!”
Alan Hopkirk – Clinical Director at Invizear
Organisers of THIS (Tinnitus and Hearing Information Shows):
Alan and his team at Invizear host THIS (Tinnitus and Hearing Information Show) which is an annual tinnitus and hearing event in the centre of Glasgow. These have included Professor David Baguley , President of the BTA (British Tinnitus Association), Dr James Jackson a researcher and lecturer from Leeds Trinity University, Dr Bill Whitmer, Medical Research Council, Glasgow and Dawn Lamerton from Lothian NHS, Edinburgh.
The success of THIS and the ability to gather input from renowned presenters highlights our commitment to tinnitus awareness and treatment of this frequently neglected, but often debilitating condition.

What Causes Tinnitus?
Nearly every person has experienced tinnitus at one time or other even if only briefly. However, for some people it not just a fleeting encounter, it is with them all the time. Tinnitus is not a disease, rather it is a symptom of an underlying problem. It is normally associated with many forms of hearing problems. (It can also be a symptom of other health problems.) Tinnitus is typically caused by:
- Hearing Loss – Most people’s tinnitus is caused by some kind of hearing loss.
- Loud Noise – Exposure to loud noise can cause permanent hearing loss and tinnitus. In addition, ongoing exposure can make the tinnitus and hearing loss worse.
- Medication – More than 200 medicines, including aspirin, can cause tinnitus. If you have tinnitus and you take medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist if that could be the cause.
Hyperacusis and Tinnitus
Hyperacusis is a condition where people find it hard to tolerate some every day sounds, for instance, a vacuum cleaner. Most of us would consider these sounds normal, however, for a sufferer, they can be painful or distressing. The causes of Hyperacusis are elusive, however, it is often linked to tinnitus. While the condition is little understood, there is an effective treatment to help alleviate the problem. Specially modified TRT protocols have proven to be powerful in treating those with Hyperacusis.
