Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT)
We now have a much better insight into tinnitus owing to an improved understanding. Research into a passive noise based approach and a drug-based solution or “cure” continue, however, we believe at present, there is still no more effective treatment than TRT. Our view was reinforced after the 1st World Tinnitus Congress / 12th Tinnitus International Research Seminar in Warsaw, Poland, May 2017. Attendance left us happily confirmed in our belief that TRT is (or certainly when combined with some further support) in pole position as a treatment. If compelling evidence suggests otherwise, we would, of course, review this. Therefore, our treatment remains based on TRT due to its effectiveness.
Our Tinnitus Treatment Principles
Our aim as clinicians is to offer the most effective treatment to our patients. We can state truly that we have no financial or contractual interests in a particular treatment protocol. Should this change we believe we have a duty to tell our patients.
TRT is a process of learning to understand the mechanism and the effects of your condition at a conscious and subconscious level. Across the world, this technique has helped many thousands of people and is very effective. Put simply, it can be compared to the sound of raindrops falling on a roof. We notice the noise when it first starts raining, but soon put it to the back of our minds as we get on with other things.
Tinnitus Retraining Therapy requires close co-operation with our highly trained specialists in order to guide and support the process. TRT aims to teach the brain to ignore tinnitus and above all the reaction to it!
TRT Therapy Individual Steps
Our tinnitus retraining therapy combines these steps:
- We collect detailed information, including patient history and in-depth auditory system analysis.
- Our experts correct any auditory or hearing deficit in a subtle, yet precise way.
- We educate and inform the patient to fully understand their condition and how we can modify this.
- Sound therapy such as tiny discreet devices emitting tailored noises diverts and modifies attention away from tinnitus.
- Psychological therapy helps patients to ignore the tinnitus noise, including deep relaxation techniques and stress management as required.
Our aim is complete habituation of the reaction to, and in some cases perception of the noise. This means that the patient regains the quality of life that they used to enjoy.

TRT Treatment Process
Treatment is simple and effective and it begins with a detailed tinnitus assessment. This takes around two hours and some patients find this enough in itself. They are reassured and cope much better once their questions are answered and their condition is explained.
Most patients, however, will be offered treatment with options starting from £2,000.00. Fees can be paid in full or a deposit agreed and we offer a “peace of mind” refund option. Ongoing support is covered by the fee and we expect to complete treatment within 9 to 18 months.
